Making Tax Digital: I Thought I'd Be Up Until Midnight Sorting My Books!

An everyday business owner's experience of MTD for Income Tax
When I first heard about Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, I won't pretend I was thrilled.
More paperwork? More HMRC deadlines? More things to remember?
I run a business. I've got customers to look after, invoices to send, suppliers to pay and about a hundred other things demanding my attention.
The last thing I needed was another evening spent staring at spreadsheets, wondering whether I'd done something wrong.
I genuinely thought MTD was going to be a headache.
Then My First Quarterly Submission Came Around
I'd been dreading it, if I'm honest.
I'd imagined spending hours going through receipts, checking bank transactions and trying to make sense of figures that never quite seemed to add up.
But my bookkeeper had already been keeping everything up to date.
My bank transactions were reconciled, my expenses were recorded, and anything that needed clarification had been dealt with along the way.
There wasn't a mountain of paperwork waiting for me.
There wasn't even a spreadsheet in sight.
All I Had to Do Was Approve the Report
An email arrived from my bookkeeper with my quarterly MTD summary.
I reviewed the figures, checked that everything looked right and gave my approval.
That was it.
My bookkeeper handled the submission to HMRC.
No late night. No panic. No frantic search for missing receipts.
And, perhaps most surprisingly, I could actually see how my business was doing.
The Unexpected Bonus
I'd always thought bookkeeping was mainly about keeping HMRC happy.
But having my accounts regularly updated meant I could see how much my business had earned, what I'd spent and where my money was going.
I wasn't waiting until the end of the tax year to find out whether I'd had a good one.
And although MTD doesn't mean my tax bill is calculated every quarter, having up-to-date figures makes it easier to plan ahead.
So, Is Making Tax Digital Really That Bad?
Well, I wouldn't exactly call it exciting.
But it wasn't the nightmare I'd expected
.
The difference was having someone who knew what they were doing, kept things organised and explained everything without making me feel as though I needed an accounting qualification.
I still run my business.
My bookkeeper looks after the books.
And I get my evenings back.
